Welcome to our fundraising page!
We’re back for another year of running the Boston Marathon for the American Liver Foundation! This year the three of us are joining forces to run and raise money in honor of live liver donation, a cause that has made an extraordinary impact on all of our lives.
In 2019, Sophie saw a Facebook post for a stranger named Caitlin Balint, who suffered from Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis (PSC) and Autoimmune Hepatitis, a rare combination of autoimmune diseases that almost always require a liver transplant for survival. Sophie quietly got tested, and after finding out she was a match, successfully donated her liver to Caitlin. Over a decade ago, Sarah and Emily’s dad Keith was also diagnosed with the same liver diseases, and they are currently searching for a live liver donor of their own.
Our connections to this disease not only led us to signing up to run for the American Liver Foundation, but also to meeting each other. Within a year we have gone from introducing ourselves on a team zoom, to training partners, to lifelong friends. Together, we run for Caitlin, who has gone from stranger to family, and for Keith, whose love of running and life is infectious. Because of the possibility of live liver donation, we hope to soon again be running with him, not just for him.
We are immensely grateful for the support that the ALF has provided to so many patients and families, the advancements in science it has promoted, and of course the friendships it has created. If you can, please consider donating to this phenomenal cause. Marathons require a whole lot of strength and perseverance, but with some incredible role models to run for and a huge community at our backs, we are more excited than ever to take on the challenge.
UPDATE: Sarah and Emily's dad, Keith, has found a living donor match! The transplant surgery is scheduled for the end of April. We are so grateful for everyone's support during the fundraising and donor search. Marathon Monday will be even more special this year!
