My Story
This coming Monday, April 17, I will be running the 127th Boston Marathon with my daughter Hailey. I am running to raise money for Silver Lining Mentoring in memory of my dad and to support a cause that I know would be very close to his heart. Please help me in this endeavor by using this page to donate to SLM.

Finishing what I started in 2020…

In 1992, my father died while jogging along the Charles River. He was 48. When I ran the 2020 (Virtual) Boston Marathon for SLM, I was 48. For many years I had been approaching this age milestone with a mixture of sadness and dread. Running for SLM empowered me take control of 2020 and make it into an important rite of passage; it changed my negative feelings into positive ones. Although COVID forced Hailey and me to run the Boston Marathon virtually, it was still an amazing experience. But now I want to finish what I started in 2020 and run the real Boston Marathon for SLM with Hailey and in honor of my dad and her grandfather.

Silver Lining Mentoring is an amazing organization!

My dad was born, raised, and lived his whole life in the Boston area. He was a caring and generous person and was always helping children and adults in our community. I know he would have loved the mission of Silver Lining Mentoring. SLM empowers youth in Greater Boston foster care to thrive through committed mentoring relationships and the development of essential life skills. They provide long term one-to-one mentoring and life skills development for young people who have been impacted by the foster care system. This is why our family has a long history of donating to their mission and why I'm running for them.

One last request… send healing thoughts!

I have been training for this run all winter. It has been tough, but I was feeling good overall until several weeks ago, when I suffered a partially herniated disc in my low back. I’ve been working closely with my doctor, two physical therapists, and a chiropractor to reset the disc and put me back together for the race. I just got the “ok” from my medical team to start the race (hence the late donation request letter). I’ve made huge progress healing, but your positive energy will help me get to the starting line (and then, perhaps, to the finish line!).

Thanks for your support - now and always,
Matt
