My very first road race en masse was a 10K as part of the Kunming Municipal Marathon in Yunnan, China in October 1989. I was an exchange student with Oberlin College's first China semester study abroad program in Kunming. Lu Lingzi herself was a young exchange student from China celebrating the cultural phenomenon that is Boston's marathon before her untimely death on that day in 2013.
This will be my fifth 26.2 mile journey, and I am honored to run in tribute to a young woman who went half a world away from her family to study. I also honor Lingzi's family in celebrating her sacrifice by establishing the Lingzi Foundation to fund cross cultural education programs for many to enjoy throughout Greater Boston. Especially during a time when China and US relationships are strained, this race is dedicated to all who make a choice to live and work across cultures in order to celebrate our shared humanity and understanding. If you are so inclined, please donate to my fundraising project to benefit the Lingzi Foundation!
