After visiting a soup kitchen during COVID, the owner of Woodstock Brewery, realized his large industrial cookers could be re-purposed to make soup. The success of his new found non-profit, Mother Soup, eventually outgrew the brewery and he handed over operations to the non-profit organisation GCU which has operated in schools and communities for 20 years. The initiative was renamed Mother City Kitchen and launched mid 2022. MCK continues to make nutritious soup and other meals on a daily basis for organizations in impoverished communities including in early childhood development facilities and schools. The industrial kitchen can produce large amounts of soup, at a low cost per unit due to the economy of scale from large industrial cookers in their factory and collaborative efforts. The recipes are designed by certified nutritionists and chefs. Protein & healthy fat supplements are added to ensure that each bowl provides the caloric and nutritional equivalent of a healthy balanced meal. A donation of $35 USD (R600) equates to daily meals for a child for a whole year!
