During my work in higher education over the past decade, the thing that has struck me the most about first generation students (I am one) is their tenacity and resilience.
They overcome almost overwhelming odds to make it through their academic term - some of the stories are heartbreaking.
A lot of these students graduate with debt due to gaps in student funding, which creates more stumbling blocks to their transition into the world of work.
With all the challenges that they face - hunger should not be the reason that they fall out of the race.
I'm challenging friends and family to donate R10 for every kilometer I run in the Cape Town Marathon. I've only signed up for the 10km because I've never run before - but want to push through my own physical barriers to support students who are silently pushing through theirs.
So all I'm asking for is R100 - the cost of a large pizza or a movie ticket,
really - but more than R100 is also welcome! (An extra R5 will cover the cost of the transaction).
I will post weekly updates on training progress and also selfies of other
friends who've taken up the challenge and will be running with me.
Let's end student hunger once and for all as we #Move4Food!
