#DoYourPart and mobilize children in South Africa
Imagine walking more than two hours to school or work every day, rain or shine. That's the fate of millions of South African school children and their families. Qhubeka provides bicycles to these communities, increasing the distance people can travel, what they can carry, where they can go and how fast they can get there.#DoYouPartBreakAway Rides is doing their part to mobilize learners in South Africa and we encourage you to do yours.Frame: R350 Back Wheel: R300Front Wheel: R300Handlebar set: R260Fork: R240 Carry Rack: R225 Helmet: R195Stand: R180 Rear Mudguard: R160Front Mudguard: R140Pump: R120Seat: R100Right Crank and Cog: R70Left Crank: R50Chainguard: R40Lock: R35Pedal Set: R30Chain: R25Tool: R20 Tyre Lever: R12Reflector Set: R10Complete bike: R2850Pick the part you want to buy and then press the donate button. Access to quality education is essential to ending the cycle of disease and poverty in Africa. Educating girls strongly correlates with reduced poverty, increased life expectancy and improved quality of life. We know that an extra year of education increases a girls’ income by 10 to 20 percent and it is considered to be a significant step on the road to breaking the cycle of poverty. Educated girls mean the chance of a better life for themselves and their children, a more prosperous community, a better workforce and a wealthier nation. Women reinvest 90% of their income back into the household, whereas men reinvest only 30% to 40%. Essentially, educating girls is one of the best long-term investments a community can make.Of students walking to school, half a million in South Africa walk for more than an hour– up to 6km each way– thus impacting concentration and learning ability.Over 60% of students who walk to school in South Africa are in the lowest income group and rural students (8.1%) are more likely than urban (3%) or metropolitan (2.7%) students to walk more than 60 minutes to school. The challenge of distance results in increased tardiness, frequent absenteeism, exhaustion and often the complete withdrawal of the child from the education system.ProjectA nation’s greatest resource for solving critical national issues in areas of national concern is in its talented and educated children. Unless the children are able to complete basic education during their development in elementary and secondary school years, their potential to assist the nation’s future hangs in the balance. One predominant reason for children not being able to access school in rural areas is the consequence of distance which discourages regular attendance and lower performance.Qhubeka distributes bicycles to students, teachers and school volunteers to improve access to education, reduce travel time and improve educational outcomes. Students earn bicycles through study-to-own contracts. In the short term, bicycles reduce children’s exhaustion from walking to school and help them attend regularly. In the long term, bicycles will help children complete their education, preparing them for better jobs and reducing likelihood of extreme poverty.BreakAway Rides in association with Kate Slegrova Cycle Training is committed to contribute to Qhubeka's mission to mobilize learners in South Africa.Join in on our mission and make your donation today!Katja & KateP.S. Bicycles for Education
Half a million South African children walk for more than an hour to school, which means every day they may be walking more than 12 km to school and back. The direct effects are tardiness, frequent absenteeism, exhaustion, lack of concentration and often the complete withdrawal from the education system. The simple solution is a bicycle! Bicycles change everything. Children arrive faster, safer and with enough time to concentrate on what’s truly important - their education and future. Meet Simphiwe, a boy whose life was changed by a bicycle: http://gigaf.org/1SIy0JEIt is hard to comprehend what these children have to go through in their young lives. Providing them with a bicycle is the least we can do, don’t you think? I am an enthusiastic mountain biker and ride for Team BreakAway, a Cape Town based amateur cycling team. Together with my team, we use our passion for the sport as a platform to create awareness and support Qhubeka and World Bicycle Relief in their mission to mobilize children with bicycles. We use our mountain biking business, BreakAway Rides (http://breakawayrides.com/) to support Qhubeka by donating 5% of our profit.1 Bike = 130 Euro. The cost of one bicycle includes component manufacturing, shipping, duty, tax, assembly, delivery, helmets, bicycle lock, field visits, field mechanic training, monitoring and evaluation. Please join us in our efforts and make your donation today. We sincerely appreciate any donation no matter how small or large! Thanks for your support!Katja & Team BreakAway--------About QhubekaQhubeka is an Nguni word that means “to carry on”, “to progress”, “to move forward”. Qhubeka is the World Bicycle Relief’s program in South Africa helping to mobilize people through the Power of Bicycles. The program envisions a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education, healthcare and economic opportunity.About the Project ‘Put Kids on Bicycles’Put kids on Bicycles is an education empowerment initiative that distribute bicycles to students, teachers and education workers to improve access to education, reduce travel time and as results boost educational outcomes.Students earn bicycles through a study-to-own contract. In the short term, bicycles reduce children’s exhaustion from walking to school and help them attend regularly. In the long term, bicycles will help children complete their education, preparing them for better jobs and reducing likelihood of poverty.---------Eine halbe Million südafrikanischer Kinder laufen jeden Tag über eine Stunde zur Schule. Katja & Team BreakAway
