The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inequalities that remain in South African society. At the UFS we see this most acutely amongst our students, many of whom don’t have access to learning resources, appropriate devices and data. A full transition to online learning has become necessary in order to complete this academic year. To ensure that all our students can keep up with the changes, we have launched this fund to generate financial support that can provide digital devices and data to disadvantaged students. Our Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Petersen and members of the UFS leadership have already pledged part of their salaries to show their support. In addition, we negotiated reasonable prices with hardware suppliers and zero-rated data with cell phone companies. All our donors will be informed of the progress with this initiative by means of reports.
To date 3 700 laptops with data have been secured at R6 000 per unit. However, more than 2000 undergraduate students are still in need of assistance. It is very easy to make an investment in someone else’s future! You can start today! Join us and make a donation to ensure that every students has the resources to finish their studies this year.
