Hlokomela (Hoedspruit Training Trust) is a small, not-for-profit, HIV&Aids healthcare organisation in the Mopani District of Limpopo, South Africa, that has mobilised to help fight the spread of the Corona Virus in the Greater Kruger to Canyons Biosphere area. This area is home to many rural communities already fighting a wide range of immune deficiencies, like HIV, TB & diabetes.
With the global COVID-19 pandemic now spreading quickly in South Africa, it is only a matter of time before these communities will start feeling the devastating effects of the virus.
With the South African tourism industry being hit hard by the outbreak, many of these people have lost their jobs due to lodges and tourism related businesses scaling down or even closing.
About 20 000 people from this area are employed in the agricultural sector, most of whom rely on public transport to get to work every day. Hlokomela is implementing awareness campaigns and hand washing stations to educate local communities as well as sending out teams to disinfect busses and mini busses in the local transport sector. The organisation has started making face masks and other protective gear in an effort to supply farm workers and other key population groups with options to slow down the spread of the corona virus.
Hlokomela is wholly dependent on donor funding and in-kind contributions from governments, international developmental organisations, and local farms and lodges for our health care activities. Unfortunately the organisation's response to the corona virus falls outside of the activities it is funded for so Hlokomela will need to tap into its savings to fight the spread of the virus in this area.
We urge the public to support us where possible to protect these extremely vulnerable communities against the pandemic.
These are difficult times globally but your donation, big or small, will go far in maintaining and stepping up our efforts to "flatten the curve".
Donations will be used for:
- The production of protective gear (like masks and buffs)
- Distribution of protective gear to the most vulnerable communities.
- Making up food parcels to be distributed to families in need, especially children, old people and farm workers/lodge workers in the greater Hoedspruit area.
- Running awareness campaigns in vulnerable communities to help spread info regarding the current pandemic of COVID -19
- Distribution of hand sanitiser and cleaning materials to vulnerable communities.
Thank you for your time and I hope that we can count on your support.
