Give Local Kids with Cancer a Merry Christmas

A fundraiser to benefit Tufts Children's Hospital

For 38 years, the Franco family, with the generous help of family, friends, and local businesses, has organized a Christmas party for families with children with cancer and blood disorders being treated at Tufts Children’s Hospital (formerly known as Floating Hospital for Children).

It all started when Jim Franco was undergoing treatment for his leukemia at 3 years old. The Christmas party was his parents’ way to give back to Tufts in thanks for the wonderful care their son received. Fortunately, Jim came off treatments at age 5, cancer free, and lives a happy and healthy life!

The holiday party in its early years was small but joyful, with donuts in the hospital corridors. Through the years, Jim and his family have evolved the party into a large event hosting hundreds of patients, their families, hospital staff, and volunteers at a local hotel ballroom. It has become the Franco family’s official kickoff to the Christmas season and their way of giving back in appreciation for everything the hospital has done.

Past parties have included a tremendous buffet, activities, music, crafts, balloon animals, and gifts with Santa. For those patients who are inpatient at the hospital, Santa visits their rooms with presents and treats from the party.

The party is an annual tradition that brings so much joy to the children, their siblings, and parents during a tough time in their lives as they struggle with the challenges of cancer treatment and other blood disorders. For many families, due to financial struggles, this is their main celebration of Christmas.

Last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to keep everyone safe, we held a fundraiser in lieu of an in-person party. Thanks to the incredible generosity of family and friends, we were able to give over 150 families gift cards to grocery stores or hospital area restaurants!

The Plan this Year:
We want to repeat the success of the fundraiser again. We cannot have an in-person party just yet, but we can still provide food and help Santa spread his Christmas cheer!

We are collecting funds to purchase gift cards to supermarkets and restaurants, so the families can afford to buy a holiday dinner.

The hospital will ensure that the gift cards and presents are distributed to the children and families while also keeping them safe.

Our hope
is that you will support this effort by donating to this page so that we can make Christmas just a little more special for families getting treatment in the pediatric hematology/oncology clinic at Tufts Children’s Hospital this year. Every child deserves the magic of the holidays. No amount is too small, and everything is appreciated more than you know. If you cannot afford to donate, please share this link to get the word out. Your donation is tax deductible and goes directly to support the clinic at Tufts Children’s Hospital.

Thank you for making a difference in the life of a child with cancer this holiday season!
