What exactly are we raising funds for?
- Timely surgery for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients – currently achieved by funded catch-up surgery lists performed predominantly at Groote Schuur Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. This is to compensate for the tremendous strain on theatre and staff resources that have led to waiting times of up to 14 weeks for cancer surgeries. Each surgery costs approximately R4000 in nursing and consumable fees with surgeons and anaesthetists donating their time and skill gratis.
- Funded surgery lists for stoma reversals for colorectal cancer patients – many colorectal cancer patients have to live with a colostomy bag after their surgical treatment. This has a massive impact on their quality of life. Sometimes these stomas can be reversed after a period of time. Due to the pressure on resources and lack of theatre time, many of these patients are forced to live with their colostomy bags far longer than necessary. After seeing how a stoma reversal can literally alter the entire trajectory of a patient’s life, we are committed to provide some theatre time every year dedicated to the reversal of stomas.
- Pamper packs for all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals. Every week a panel of expert clinicians, including surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and radiologists meet with approximately 20 newly diagnosed patients to discuss their diagnosis and treatment plan. This is a life-changing and traumatic afternoon for these women – our pamper packs are an attempt to keep their feminine spirit alive. These pamper packs contain some bathroom essentials, a snack - anything to remind them that they are not alone and will be cared for. The idea of the Pamper pack has truly taken off – and has become a token of hope.
