On 10 March, thousands of South Africans will unite against women and child abuse in South Africa at the 1st for Women Sisters with Blisters Walk with Jacaranda FM, a 5km walk and peaceful protest against gender-based violence.
It is well known that levels of violence against women and children in South Africa are staggeringly high. In some communities, experiencing violence is the norm and not the exception. For example, in Diepsloot, where LvA works, more than 50% of men surveyed committed violence against a woman in the previous year. Tragically, most victims of violence have no one to turn to for help.
LvA ensures that no victim has to suffer in silence or face violence alone by providing free legal services, including assisting with protection orders and pursuing criminal cases of rape and assault. LvA also attends to victims' emotional and psychological needs by providing individual and group therapy sessions. Lastly, LvA works with police, courts, and communities towards systemic change by shifting attitudes and behaviours and creating accountability.
But we can't do it alone! Join us by registering for the walk and becoming an LvA Activist to raise additional funds and awareness among your family, friends, and colleagues? Activists who raise at least R5,000 will be given a free LvA tshirt to wear at the walk.
