SHAWCO’s Academic Interventions Unit (Saturday Schools) provides an intensive programme on Saturdays, to prepare learners for matric and for higher education, including critical thinking and engagement skills, core academic subjects (Maths, English and Sciences, taught by top educators) and career planning.
Established in 2009, over 200 learners attend each year, selected in partnership with over 40 schools in previously disadvantaged areas. The programme has yielded excellent results, with most ‘graduates’ continuing to further their studies at tertiary institutions, including but not limited to UCT.
In 2017, average attendance at the programme was 85%. Of 157 matriculants who attended Saturday School in 2016, 86.8% achieved a bachelor’s pass and 11% achieved a diploma pass, and 216 distinctions were obtained.
