Olievenhoutbosch is one of the fastest-growing townships in Gauteng, situated in the affluent Centurion area of the City of Tshwane. Despite recent developmental efforts by the local government, the community still faces many of the socio-economic challenges which are commonplace in townships, with many people residing in informal and backyard dwellings.
The rapid growth of the township is driven by the expanding affluence and development of the Centurion area. Despite the surrounding affluence, up to 32% of the population is dependent on grants. It has also been reported that up to 15% of households have no monthly income. The devastating economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic first wave has exacerbated this issue, with residents reportedly forming lines of up to 4 km to receive food during May of 2020.
The community of Olievenhoutbosch faces numerous public safety concerns. It has the third-largest number of reported crimes in Centurion, with aggravated robbery and household burglary being the most prevalent. There have been a variety of common challenges associated with settlement in the backyard and informal dwellings. The prevalence of backyard dwelling in the community results in a high population density, making residents of the community more vulnerable to the spread of the current pandemic. The threat of shack-fires is also consistent, which puts human lives and possessions at risk.
