A safe space for young people to talk

Please join us in supporting our learners at Makupula Secondary School in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch. We are a successful and positive school even though our pupils come from a background where issues of poverty affect their lives. We are determined to help our children deal with the extremely challenging circumstances that some of them face and so are asking you to help fund our Community Keepers Office .

We're investing in the social, emotional and mental well-being of our learners and their caregivers as we create a supportive school community where learning and development can prosper.

The office, on our school premises, was opened in 2020, with a team who offer crisis interventions, psycho-social support, social and emotional learning opportunities, therapeutic counselling, support groups and resilience building workshops.  They deal with challenging topics such as anxiety, depression, self esteem, self harm, anger management, gender-based violence and healthy boundaries.  We aim to destigmatise mental health issues, enhance mental health literacy and encourage help-seeking behaviour in order to make a difference in the lives of our learners.

“I feel okay now after our sessions.” Student

"I don’t know what to say, but you have really helped me a lot, so thank you sister. Next time when I have something bothering me I will come, I will never forget you.” Student

“CK provides a service that we, as educators, cannot. We see our learners need a shoulder to lean on, advice and in some cases radical intervention." Teacher

“The nature of our role means we do not have the time, resources, or skills to cater for the needs of the whole child. I am certain that CK has made our school a safer, friendly, and wiser place by providing the holistic care that we would never be able to give. They also provide support to us as staff so we build the resilience we need." Teacher

Please would you make a donation towards this powerful project.  Your gift could be the catalyst needed to keep one more young person engaged in school or make one more teenager feel seen and heard.
