“Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.”
-- Nelson Mandela
Call 2 Care has partnered up with JustSpace to shed light on the importance of literacy and help bridge the gap of literacy and digital accessibility for our Youth this International Literacy Day on the 8th September 2021. Here’s how YOU can help!
This year the UN theme for Literacy Day is “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide”. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated South Africa’s digital literacy challenges as only 37% of households have consistent access to the internet and many public schools are unable to continue effectively teaching all their students owing to their lack of digital resources. Children from low-income households and those living in rural areas do not have access to the same level of technology, connectivity and digital appliances as those from wealthier areas and this will have dire consequences for their education and their future.
JustSpace is a newly established after-school program in an under-resourced area of Somerset West that strives to bridge the literacy gap for children from Grade R to Grade 4. This initiative covers all aspects of education by focusing on purposeful learning, healing and restoration and developing leadership skills in society to pave the way for a better life for the youth of South Africa.
To help JustSpace with its mission, Call 2 Care plans to build an inspiring reading and learning environment, to compile a library of literacy resources and digital media and to host an event on Literacy day to create this space, read to the children, and share the importance of Literacy Day with you and JustSpace.
HOW CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
Monetary donations can assist us to invest in the materials required to revamp the JustSpace facility for immersive creative learning. This will go a long way to creating an inspiring space for the children.
Monetary donations can assist us to purchase and subscribe to digital software that will enable online learning for the children, in platforms such as Reading Eggs, Minecraft Education and Khan Academy. R1200 donation will give access to 4 learners for a whole year. We need to have access for up to 80 learners.
Any contribution, whether big or small, goes a long way! Be the change this International Literacy Day and help redefine the future of our youth in South Africa, for South Africa!
