Ward Revamps

If the Heart Kids mission is to save lives, why do we revamp Paediatric Cardiac Wards?

Various studies have shown that a health care environment that looks friendly and that incorporates the therapeutic effect of art on the walls, not only leads to children and families feeling more comfortable, but it also contributed to improved recovery times.

A friendly health care environment also lift the moral of the health care professionals. Their healthy attitudes will also contribute to an environment more conducive to healing.

You too can make a difference. If you are in the Pretoria area, you can join us on Saturday 8 April as we embark on the next step in our ward revamp, or you can contribute financially toward the revamping of this and other wards in the Gauteng area.

Cape Town Movie Night

Hi friends!

The UCT Cardiac Society is having a fundraiser this coming Wednesday in support of Heart Kids South Africa; an organisation that supports the families of children diagnosed with various congenital heart defects.

We are hosting a screening of the Emmy-winning, heart-warming movie, Something the Lord Made. This tells the tale of the first successful human heart surgery, which was done to repair a little girl's Tetralogy of Fallot defect. The incredible pioneer of this surgery was Dr Alfred Blacock, and he was assisted by Vivian Thomas. Vivian Thomas was a lab assistant and had no formal medical training, and the movie explores the criticism Blacock faced and the obstacles and difficulties Thomas faced as they worked together. Thomas played a crucial role in the surgery, and has been likened to Hamilton Naki.

Tickets will be sold at the door for R10 (all proceeds will go to Heart Kids SA). Donations are also encouraged.

Date: Wednesday, 5 April
Venue: Wolfson Lecture Theatre, UCT Medical Campus
Time: 18:00 for 18:30
Popcorn and refreshments will be served.

Please note: this is a fundraiser, and thus it is open to everyone, not just our members and we would like to encourage you all to attend in support of Heart Kids SA.

We will also be doing our New Members Raffle draw for Cardiology Secrets textbook and Gilroy's Anatomy Flash Cards. So be sure to come so that you're not disappointed if we draw your name and you're not there to collect your prize
