Greenpop - Eden Regeneration Project

In June 2017, devastating wildfires wreaked havoc on large areas of the Eden District along South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route, particularly near Knysna. The extremity of the fires was exacerbated by the uncontrolled spread of alien plant species in the area.

The impact of these fires has been immense on a social and environmental level. The general consensus is that long-term efforts need to be focused on regeneration through the planting of indigenous trees, introducing ecosystem services, removing alien vegetation and catchment management. The socio-ecological effects and challenges presented by the Eden fires are complex. Greenpop’s work aims to focus on multi-stakeholder engagement including local communities, local government, NGOs and academia to support and collaborate on existing initiatives by bringing our time, logistics and human resources.

Greenpop is launching ongoing environmental work in the region. We’ll plant indigenous trees, assist with alien clearing, build with eco-bricks, brighten up schools with environmental murals and spread education.

Greenpop’s programmes aim to adapt in response to learnings from the prior years, the context, multiple stakeholders and ongoing education. 2018 will be the first year of working in the Eden area and we hope to gain knowledge and support in the programmes we are embarking upon. We aim to create sustainable programmes with robust monitoring and evaluation so that the projects become ongoing.

As a start, the project will encompass the below aims and our fundraising goals are as follows:

  1. Urban Greening
(we aim to run urban greening activations at approx 10 schools/community centres to regreen areas in need = R20 000 per site)
  2. Reforestation
(we aim to plant between 5000 and 10 000 indigenous trees in areas needing regeneration. At R120 a tree this is a goal of R600 000 to R1200000)
  3. Alien Clearing
(we aim to do 3 days of intensive mass alien vegetation clearing in areas where it is growing back rapidly after the fire. This will be approximately R25 000 per day)
  4. Eco-Building
(we aim to build 2 benches at under-resourced sites out of eco-bricks to brighten spaces and spread awareness about waste management. This will be R20 000 per bench including education)
  5. Environmental Art
(we aim to do 2 to 6 environmental art murals to brighten up spaces and spread valuable environmental messages. Depending on the size of these murals, we estimate these will be approximately R20 000 to R60 000 per site)
