Christel House SA is based in Ottery, Cape Town. Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty by providing holistic, character-based and career-focused education and support to a 1000+ students from some of Cape Town’s poorest neighbourhoods. Our unique Christel House model is structured around a comprehensive 19-year program, starting with enrolment in Grade RR and culminating in 5 years post school support through tertiary education and into gainful employment.
The main criterion for admission to Christel House is not evidence of talent – but evidence of poverty, one measure of which is a maximum average income of R1,500 per household member per month – ensuring that we reach students and families with the greatest needs. Students receive a 100% funded education scholarship on admission including daily transport to school, meals, uniforms, learning materials, healthcare, psychosocial support & career guidance.
We’re proud to have a 99% matric average pass rate since inception and to have 86% of our students in tertiary education or employment.
For the past 20 years, we have helped to transform the lives of thousands of students, including
- Nonthando: “I started at Christel House when I was in Grade 3. I was a below average student, could not speak English and was very shy. In 2009, I graduated as the first ever valedictorian of our school. Christel House changed my life”. Today Nonthando is a chemical engineer.
- Mujaahid: “Having joined Christel House in grade 2, the experience was vastly different from my previous school. It was a much better environment, the support provided for me at the school has allowed me to have the opportunity in furthering my education and bettering my life”. In 2021, he graduated his dentistry degree and is starting his career in 2022.
- Lauren: “You don’t have to apologise for being poor, but you can do something about it. It starts with your education”. In 2017, she graduated with 6 distinctions and is Golden Key member at the University of Stellenbosch
