covid-19 FOOD SYSTEM

The Humanitarian Effort is one of three immediate focus areas for the disbursement of funds donated by Donors to the Siyakholwa covid-19 Relief Fund.

To provide accelerated aid for South Africa’s most vulnerable households and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and after, the Humanitarian Effort will focus on promoting human welfare through augmenting the efforts of Siyakholwa to enhance the households’ ability to cope through the pandemic – through sustaining access to food, care and other interventions to alleviate the impacts of economic disruption.

Food and Ppes
The food parcels, which will provide a family with food essentials for a two to four weeks (depending on the size of the household), will be delivered during the lockdown period and after as emergency food relief for vulnerable households experiencing severe food insecurity.

FOOD SYSTEM NETWORKING

The aim is to encourage farmers to reflect on their accomplishments and to exchange ideas on sustainable farming practice.

The theme for this year’s nutrition fair, “From Seed to Plate” highlights the importance of household food production, a journey starting with planting a seed and caring for it until it reaches maturity. The theme expands on farmers’ indigenous knowledge on seed saving combined with technical knowledge acquired through training on seedling production, i.e. how growing food from seed saves money and increases self-reliance.

The programme will include:

A demonstration of the rural farmers and informal settlements version of a flood irrigation system.

A walkabout of the some of the communal gardens belonging to rural farmers

Presentations by farmers, Siyakholwa staff and government stakeholders, other farming networking

Providing start-up small farming with seeds and equipment to start farming and training

A display of the agricultural and non-agricultural products prepared by farmers in the market

Job creation programmes in all 9 provinces.

Siyakholwa and Team has been reaching out to the rural community and informal settlements with a focus on improving the lives of local household farmers for almost a decade; in this time Siyakholwa and Partners to train and educated hundreds of individuals and small farmers and community members, in disadvantaged communities national.
