Since 2019, Senecio has been supporting Adult Day Care centres around the Western Cape, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, to improve the lives of adults with disabilities. After a process of needs analysis, conducted by our occupational therapists, we have been developing and refining a training programme for the staff who work at these centres. We found that most staff had no training in disability at all, but were expected to provide activity programmes and individual support and care for large groups of adults with disabilities.
Our training programme is divided into three phases, laying a foundation for understanding what disability is (and isn’t), common disabilities and how they can provide support, and how they can develop their own programmes within their centres.
To date we have trained 50 staff who have completed all three levels of training. We are gearing up to continue training into 2023, with three training sessions planned for the next couple of months for staff from 7 centres.
Funds raised through Givengain will be used towards these training sessions – training materials, venues and transport costs.
