Project Gateway is a church-based, non-profit making organisation, serving the city of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We aim to equip and empower local people through our enterprise, education and care activities. The project was formally established in 1992
Our mission statement reflects the vision of the project:
‘To change people’s lives by helping them physically, emotionally and spiritually. We aim to uplift people and their communities through job and life skills, reaching all people without prejudice, showing the compassion of Jesus Christ, and honouring our Creator.’
Empowerment
The Empowerment programmes provide job and life skills training as well as hard skills training in fashion design, sewing and pattern making, and computer literacy. Our business development programme seeks to raise up well-equipped entrepreneurs running sustainable businesses in a number of sectors, and provides training and mentoring opportunities for learners in starting up small and micro-businesses.
Care
We offer a programme of training and care in HIV/AIDS and TB related needs, we care for vulnerable women - those who find themselves victims of crime and violence, we have a pregnancy care programme which protects, guides and nurtures young women in pregnancy related crises, and our overnight shelter provides a safe haven, accommodation and meals for the homeless on a daily basis. We also support a number of feeding schemes in the city and the surrounding communities.
Education
Gateway Christian School provides good quality education at affordable fees for many children in the local area. It currently educates more than 450 children. We also have a boarding facility for orphaned and vulnerable children, and those with other exceptional circumstances.
