The Phansi Museum was founded in 2000. It is situated in Glenwood, Durban, in a three storey Victorian National Monument. It houses the largest collection of Southern African traditional artefacts in South Africa. It is a repository of cultural heritage and custom. The museum is governed by the Phansi Museum Trust, whose mission statement is to:

1. Engage in ongoing research into the indigenous cultural history and heritage of South Africa

2. Establish a publically accessible database of indigenous arts, crafts, artefacts, ceremonies and customs

3. Educate the public about the history and value of South Africa’s indigenous cultural heritage.

The museum is a registered NPO and has tax-exempt status.
