We're working with schools in Mfuleni to upgrade their facilities to the point where they can register as Early Childhood Development centres, thereby unlocking funding to make them sustainable and able to truly give children in under-resourced areas a Starting Chance.
The Lonwabo Special Care Centre currently has 38 children between the ages of 0 to 18. The existing facility is threatened with closure because the increasingly stringent health and safety regulations cannot be met there.
Sadly, in poor communities like Mfuleni, children with special needs are often left at home when parents are seeking employment or at work - they are called the "forgotten children".
The new facility will form part of a purpose-designed campus in which an inclusive learning environment which will enable the interaction of children of all abilities under supervision. The integration with a small healthcare facility will enable early diagnosis of special needs for young children, giving them a starting chance to reach their full potential.
