Approximately 7 babies are abandoned a day in South Africa.
Atlantic Hope is a registered non-profit organisation (085-420-NPO) based in Cape Town, South Africa. We are a Place of Safety for vulnerable and abandoned babies – we provide temporary emergency care for babies that have been abandoned, removed from their guardian’s care for drug/ alcohol abuse, neglect or suspected child trafficking, or are babies that are awaiting adoption.
Atlantic Hope was started by Marilyn May. She literally opened the doors of her own home – her dining room is now the nursery and the lounge is the ‘play area’. This was in 2010 and since opening, Atlantic Hope has cared for 87 babies.
Atlantic Hope provides basic developmental, physical and mental care. Medical needs are prioritised, and we provide nutrition, shelter, health care services and give these babies the maximum nurturing and care that they need as they begin their lives in the absence of their parents. Atlantic Hope is legally approved to house up to six babies at one time. We provide the much needed care whilst legal decisions and proceedings determining the child’s future are conducted by the social workers, in the most loving and peaceful safe haven.
