What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting movement, sensation, and bodily functions. It is caused by destruction of the myelin insulation covering nerve fibers (neurons) in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It can attack or affect anyone at any time.
MS is a nerve disorder caused by destruction of the insulating layer surrounding neurons in the brain and spinal cord. This insulation, called myelin, helps electrical signals pass quickly and smoothly between the brain and the rest of the body. When the myelin is destroyed, nerve messages are sent more slowly and less efficiently. Patches of scar tissue, called plaques, form over the affected areas, further disrupting nerve communication. The symptoms of MS occur when the brain and spinal cord nerves no longer communicate properly with other parts of the body. MS causes a wide variety of symptoms and can affect vision, balance, strength, sensation, coordination, and bodily functions.
Basically, it is the body’s immune system attacking and fighting itself – treatment is immune system suppressors. There is no cure.
Our challenge – is to complete the 35km fun ride, 65km and 106km Amashova Classic on 18th October 2015. This will be to raise awareness and much needed funds for Multiple Sclerosis.
Last year we were represented by 100 cyclists and a great support crew.
We raised just over R150 000.00 for MSKZN – THANK YOU to all who supported.
Our goal – is to recruit as many (minimum of 50) able bodied and physically challenged people (yes even if you are unfit) as possible, to join our group to cycle the 35km fun ride as a group to raise much needed funds and to create awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. This year we also have cyclists riding the 65km and 106km Races. As a team member you are requested to get sponsorship and we are aiming at each person raising a MINIMUM of R1000.00.
Because of our great response last year and the great team effort and fun we are hoping to recruit many more cyclists for this event. We would also like to be represented in the 65 and 106km races (cycling shirts will be available for purchase for these rides)
LETS DO THIS!!!! Let us beat last year’s unbelievable effort and set our bar a little higher.
We are also looking for corporate sponsorship (tax certificates are provided for you donations). Any corporate sponsorship from R1000 and up will be acknowledged and mentioned in all our correspondence.
What we need from you if you want to join the ride – your commitment to raise a minimum of R1000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society KZN Branch. Your name and e-mail address so we can keep you up to date with what is going on, any news and updates on funds raised to date.
Race registration and cycling licence for the day
35km Charity Batch R180-00.
Race fees to be paid to either Oliver or Michelle by no later than TBA. This is to ensure we secure our charity batch.
We will provide a t-shirt to ride in for the 35km
For the 65km and 106km you can support us by buying our cycling shirt and riding in our colours.
What you need: You will need to arrange a drop off and pick up for before and after the ride and your own bike and helmet.
All funds raised will be donated directly to the MS Assosiation of KZN (NPO No. 002-318/PBO ref 930-012-603). The aim of this society is to help sufferers as much as possible. We help them with wheelchairs, walking aids, special mattresses and cushions, sheepskins, incontinence pads, food parcels, transportation to hospital check- ups when possible and in some cases, monetary help with medical bills. We also provide qualified carers for those members who need assistance with bathing, dressing, feeding etc.
We are also on Facebook and you can find us at: https://www.facebook.com/#!/cyclingforms
Thank you for your support
Michelle & Oliver Sinclair
