Cape Town Society for the Blind (CTSB) has employed a Mobility Practitioner to assist with the orientation and mobility of people who are blind or visually impaired (VIP). Blind and VIP are taught how to travel independently and become mobile within their work place, homes and surroundings. To achieve this goal, the blind or VIP requires an assistive device which is known as the Long Cane. The role of the cane is to alert blind and VIP of obstacles which may be along the way and prevent them from walking into objects. One challenge that most blind or VIP face is that the cost of this Long Cane is R450.00 each and as most of our clients are youth and unemployed from the disadvantaged areas within the Cape Metropole. All training offered at CTSB is at no cost to unemployed blind or VIP.
