Boston Medical Center (BMC) has proudly participated in Boston’s historic marathon since 2002, raising more than $7 million for the hospital. Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the race to shift to a virtual format for the first time in history. Nevertheless, Team BMC prevailed by showing its commitment and dedication to BMC and its patients at a time when it was needed most.
Now, as patients begin to come out on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, BMC’s work is only just beginning. Funds raised by Team BMC’s marathon team will be vitally important to the hospital’s efforts to ensure the BMC community prospers in the wake of the COVID crisis.
BMC has witnessed firsthand how COVID-19 has disproportionately affected its patients, many of whom are from disinvested communities—an indicator that ZIP code is often the strongest predictor of health outcomes. BMC also recognizes that its post-pandemic response is just as critical as its relief efforts. Therefore, BMC is doubling down on the work it’s been doing for years to advance health equity and address social determinants of health. Now is the time to shift the health care landscape and break the chronic cycle of disease burdens dictated by race, ethnicity, ZIP code and income.
For 25 years, BMC has stood at the intersection of social justice and health care innovation. With a wraparound care approach that looks at the patient as a whole, BMC has long recognized that much of what impacts a patient’s overall health goes well beyond the scope of traditional medicine. By continuing to expand safety-net programs and build upon community partnerships and health equity programming, the hospital is furthering its efforts to be an advocate and partner for all patients. In turn, it will yield better health outcomes, educational advancement, economic mobility, housing and career opportunities, resulting in happier and healthier people, families and communities.
BMC is uniquely positioned to lead this incredible effort and pave the way forward in making a more equitable future for all. With your support, Team BMC’s goal is to raise vital funds to make advancements in health equity attainable and have a lasting impact on BMC’s patients and community. Together, we will move mountains.
As always, Boston Medical Center is proud to be an official non-profit partner of John Hancock’s Marathon Non-Profit Program. The hospital is grateful to both Team BMC Founding Sponsor John Hancock and the Boston Athletic Association for propelling BMC’s mission of exceptional care, without exception for all.
Thank you for supporting Team BMC!
