Donating Mother Tongue Books to South African children!
Problem
According to data from census 2011, there are 11.6 million Zulu speakers and 8.1 million Xhosa speakers in SA. It is, therefore, no surprise that these 2 languages are of the highest requests we receive. We have donated over 6,000 isiZulu and isiXhosa books during 2017 alone, and as a result, we are faced with the challenge of having noticeably fewer books available in these 2 languages.
Solution
The funds raised from this project will enable Biblionef to purchase approximately 500 new isiZulu books and 500 new isiXhosa books. Having these additional storybooks in our book stock will allow us to reach even more beneficiaries whose mother tongue is Zulu and Xhosa.
Long-term Impact
The long-term impact of this donation will be seen when coupled with the school's literacy initiatives. Research has shown that reading in one's mother tongue is an essential and powerful part of learning a new language and developing literacy. When you read regularly to children in their home language/s, you give them a strong language foundation that makes all learning easier. As a result, children's transition to the English language will be easier and their literacy levels will improve.
