Outward Bound South Africa has recognised that the rates of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) have reached crisis proportions. There are not many programmes in South Africa that deal with young people and how they can play a role in preventing GBV from happening to them or to prevent them from becoming perpetrators of GBV in the future. That’s why we have partnered with Women Lead Movement, an NPO established in 2017, based in Cape Town, that promotes gender equality at grassroots level.

Together, we have created a life changing, youth-led Gender Equality intervention. Core to Outward Bound’s educational approach is creating an environment which challenges limiting and destructive belief systems. The programme is a transformative 5-day intervention that embodies experiential learning opportunities that educate, encourage growth and empower girls and boys to become responsible and tolerant citizens who embrace differences.

The goal of this project is to provide tools and strategies to the youth to prevent and reduce gender-based violence to achieve violence-free communities.

The programme is focused on youth between the ages of 13-18 who are most susceptible to violence. However, the youth have an ability to influence their peers to adopt positive attitudes, mindsets and behaviours but they can only do so when they are equipped. “If you know better, you do better”.
