Each year, the UCT Surgical Society organises an event to raise funds for the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. All proceeds from the event go towards a worthwhile initiative called "The Weekend Waiting List Initiative," which aims to combat the protracted waiting list at Red Cross Hospital by providing an additional pro bono day of surgery (on a Saturday) for the children.
This initiative has been running since 2011 and has thus far enabled more than 800 operations to be performed on children who otherwise would have had to wait months.
What the "Scrub Run" entails is a group of passionate medical students who will be running the 10KM Peace Run at the Cape Town Marathon on 15th September 2019 in our medical scrubs in order to raise funds and awareness for this worthy cause.
We are also extremely grateful to the Pediatric Surgery Team from Red Cross, who have organised a number of surgeons to join the medical students on the run. It is sure to be a festive event! Last year, we collectively managed to raise R150 000, with 100% of proceeds going towards “The Weekend Waiting List Initiative.”
In 2019, with your help, we hope to exceed our target from last year so that we can provide even more children with the surgeries that they so desperately need. Our dream as a Surgical Society is to eradicate the protracted waiting list so that each child can receive the essential surgery he/she needs, without delay. We are incredibly excited about this initiative and would be very grateful if you would consider making a donation to this worthwhile cause so that we can reach our fundraising targets.
