The most dangerous time for children living in poor communities in South Africa is the time after school and before their parents get home.  They are at risk of all kinds of abuse and temptations to participate in damaging behaviours.

The Kronendal Music Academy offers after-school music lessons to 150 children from the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement and Hangberg fishing village in Hout Bay, South Africa. Many of these children live in extreme poverty and are often traumatised yet, when they start to play their instruments, they seem to escape from their hardships and shine.

Sisipho is a shy little girl who struggles to focus but she tells us that next year she really wants to start drumming, "I love the noisy sound drums make".  Owami lives in a one room shack with her mother who works night shift at the local petrol station.  Kamva met us when his cousins took refuge at KMA following the devastating 2017 fires - he has since gone on tour with us to Edinburgh and he has his hopes set on a degree in music.

Our bursaries cover an extensive range of opportunities including individual lessons, ensembles and choirs, African instruments tuition, theory and rhythm classes, stage performances, exposure to professional musicians, international grading, instruments and accessories, uniforms and costumes, music books and study materials, access to a social worker, eye tests and glasses, school homework assistance, safe transport and a daily nourishing meal (for some of the children, this is their only meal of the day).

These children have so much stacked against them yet respond with enthusiasm to the smallest gesture of support.  Please reach out to them and show how much you care...
