EmPowering their Dreams!
As part of the Sophia for Children’s activities focusing on providing safety, food, accommodation, education and medical care to poor and deprived children, aiming at giving them the means for a better life, the NGO took the Makarios Children’s Home, an orphanage in Nyeri, Kenya, under its total care in 2009.
The Makarios Children’s Home, has more than 200 children under its guardianship, 80 of whom live on the premises. Sophia for Children is responsible for running the orphanage and for the children’s overall well-being. When the Sophia for Children took over the orphanage, the premises were in extremely poor condition, with rain coming through the roof, no toilets or running water. By the end of 2012, three new buildings were built comprising of two dormitories, a big kitchen and dining hall.
In 2019-2020 through the joint efforts of our group of walkers and a group of runners (Running/Walking for their Dreams) we managed to raise funds for the rebuilding of the Makarios Nursery and Primary school in Nyeri, the school which the children of the orphanage attend.
As many of the children in the orphanage are vulnerable, with compromised immune systems and suffering from serious illnesses as AIDS, the needs of the orphanage are many.
Our new fundraiser aims to raise funds to provide the orphanage with solar water heaters so as to ensure an uninterrupted hot water supply for showering so the children do not get sick.
Help us raise the funds needed to equip the orphanage with solar water heaters for all the dormitories and change the lives of the children drastically for the better.
Our group of walkers will participate in a 4-day walk in November (3/11- 6/11), covering a total distance of 65km in the area of the Paphos Forest and Akamas.
Our target is to raise 15,000 euros, the sum required to install solar panels at the Makarios Children's Home.
Your contribution will help us empower the dreams of the children who need our support!
