Khula Development Group is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) with the mission to promote a positive culture of learning and strengthen the value of education and attendance for children at risk of school disengagement through school, home and community based preventative and restorative initiatives.
Across the country, an estimated (40%) of Grade 1 learners will leave the schooling system before finishing Grade 12 (Zero Dropout Campaign). About 300 000 learners drop out of school each year.
The importance of regular school attendance and education is often not recognized. Due to COVID-19, many different social factors and the manifestation of poverty, it is easy for children to start a cycle of school absenteeism.
The majority of these reasons can be addressed through intervention on a regular basis. Issues such as substance and physical abuse are more difficult to address, especially when the problem lies with the parent or primary caregiver.
In addressing some of these problems, Khula manages three programmes in We have three programmes operating in the following areas: Paarl East, Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Klapmuts.
School2Home Support Programme:
To provide school- and home-based support of learners presenting with early warning signs indicating an increased risk of school disengagement. To promote learner and parental / household engagement in the child’s education.
Love2Learn Community Programme:
To promote a culture of learning and strengthen the value of education and attendance through child & primary caregiver participation, youth activation and community collaboration.
Child well-being service:
To support vulnerable children through preventative interventions and collaboration with the aim to reduce the risk of significant harm that impacts their safety, school engagement and well-being
