FoodForward SA
Charity profile
One third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while more than 14 million people go hungry every day.
Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering quality edible surplus food from the consumer goods supply chain and distributing it to community organisations that collectively serve 700,000 people per day. More than 80% of the food recovered is nutritious food.
Our Vision: A South Africa without hunger.
Our Mission: To reduce hunger in South Africa by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food, and making it available to those who need it.
FoodForward SA is the largest food redistribution organisation in South Africa.
We distribute good quality, edible surplus food to registered NPOs that provide at least four meals per week. These NPO’s register as FoodForward SA beneficiary organisations (BO's) and pay a nominal membership fee. They receive a monthly nutritious food basket, which is allocated according to the number of people served.
We source and collect this food from retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers, farmers and growers, sorting and storing it at our warehouses across the country, and ensuring it is responsibly redistributed to registered BOs across South Africa.
We also connect our BOs directly to retail stores and food outlets for the regular collection of surplus food through our digital platform – FoodShare. The platform is efficient and cost-effective, and reaches wherever hunger manifests to give vulnerable people greater access to food.
2019 marks our 10 year anniversary, and to commemorate this, we have set ourselves the goal of growing to feed a million people daily within 5 years. It costs just 85c for FoodForward SA to distribute a meal’s worth of food. That means that for only R50, you can help feed a person with two meals a day for a month.
