Children of the Dawn (COTD) was founded in early 2002 to respond to the challenge of the growing number of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in rural South Africa. In 2018, South Africa counted some 2'800'000 orphans aged 0 to 17. COTD has for mission to give such children the care and childhood they deserve in a community setting.

At present, COTD cares for 830 primary OVC, reaching over 4300 children and adults in total, across 8 rural communities. Through our 24 day care centres, our primary objectives are to offer holistic care by responding to basic needs such as schooling, nutrition, clothing, hygiene, health, emotional and moral support, and opening new doors of opportunities through educational and leisure activities, work on access to social grants, and many other meaningful projects giving sense to a child’s life. We also work with an additional 150 children with leisure and educational activities only.
