UCT Scrub Run

The UCT Surgical Society is a student run organisation affiliated with The Department of Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital. This year the society has decided to host a fundraising event for Red Cross Children's Hospital - a leading paediatric facility. The society is hosting a Scub Run with participants running the Cape Town Marathon 10 KM in their scrubs to raise money for the Weekend Waiting List Initiative.

The Weekend Waiting List Initiative was set up in 2011 to combat the protracted waiting list at the hospital. It provides an extra day of surgery for children who were rescheduled due to emergencies or more life-threatening surgeries. To date the initiative has resulted in over 800 surgeries being performed.

The initiative speaks to the ethos of the UCT Surgical Society by providing surgery related outreach and doctors going beyond their call of duty. We are looking to gain sponsorship for each kilometer run by our team to allow the exceptional work of the surgeons to continue.
