We are all worthy. Worthy of whatever it is our hearts desire. Worthy of happiness. Worthy of life. It doesn't matter who you are. It doesn’t matter if you're squiggly, squishy, fluffy or gooey. It doesn't matter if you plant a billion trees or don't recycle at all. There is absolutely NO discrimination from Mother Earth. She provides oxygen, she offers her food, she gives you materials, she lays down her life lessons. Her mountains inspire, her oceans tickle the imagination, her trees whisper secrets. She keeps you alive- physically and spiritually. Mama E is the OG when it comes to loving everyone and treating everyone the same. We wouldn’t be without her and she doesn’t expect anything in return. There is a lot we can learn from her.
Obviously, if you put in a little more, love your plants in the morning, talk to them at night, your grass might be a bit greener than the other side's, but as a human (or animal) for survival there is absolutely zero, zilch, none-whatsoever discrimination from Mother Earth. There are no clauses, no fine prints, no hidden emotions. There is just an abundance of giving.
Another important factor to acknowledge is that Mother Nature is alive. The research and studies have been done. Trees communicate, look after one another, share their resources, they are alive. They gift us with lessons and the wisdom of the ages. And although human egos might prevent us from listening at times, when you get quiet and go sit under the shade of one of these beauties, you’d be surprised how much you can learn.

So why are we telling you all this?
We are destroying her. Money talks louder than trees, and unfortunately a lot of people are listening. These are the unfortunate facts:
- 80% of the world's forests are already destroyed.
- 80 000 acres (or roughly 32 000 hectares) of forests disappear from the earth every day.
- Every 2 seconds mankind destroys an area of forest the size of a football field.
- Removing trees deprives the forest of portions of its canopy, which blocks the sun's rays during the day and holds in heat at night. The disruption leads to more extreme temperatures that can be harmful to plants and animals.
- 28 000 species are expected to become extinct by the next 25 years due to deforestation.
Last year the destruction hit close to home as well. More than 10 000 hectares in Knysna (Eden municipality) was destroyed by the alien-fires that swooshed through the area.
Is all hope lost?
Elementree, my dear Wattle.
There is always hope. And in South Africa, there are a group of extraordinary people who’ve been at it since 2010. Meet Greenpop. A NPO who took the responsibility upon themselves to plant trees. They care about the environment and giving back. They organize urban greening and reforestation projects, teach environmental awareness, and make it fun and easy for the everyperson to get involved.
This time they’re heading to Eden.
“Over three weeks we will plant trees, rehabilitate ecosystems, clear alien vegetation, build using eco-methods, set up recycling systems, paint eco murals, attend sustainability workshops, celebrate with live music and more. It’s an adventure for active citizens who want to change their world.”
[To learn more about them visit https://greenpop.org].
Let’s be honest though. Mother Earth will survive whatever we throw at her. She has been here for billions of years (that’s billions with a B).
However, if YOU want to survive, you’re going to need to do your part.
Branch out. Add a new habit this week. Fill your heart with gratitude. Thank Mother Nature. If you feel stumped as to how you can do this, we've got a wonderful suggestion. Give a tree! R120 is all it takes. This will gift Eden with an indigenous, locally-sourced tree. (But you can donate even less. Every bit helps!) Greenpop will plant it for you, and we’re going to help them (for every 80 trees donated, we can send a member of our team, yay!). You will also get a certificate with the coordinates of the piece of future-shade that you made happen. Thank you. If you’d like to help with the planting yourself, check out Greenpop’s Eden – Festival of Action. You too can get in on the action. Many hands make light work.
The best part though? Even if you can't help with a donation right now. Mother Earth doesn't mind... she'll still love you the same and bless you with oxygen and sustenance. Every day of your life.
There is a lot we can learn from nature.
