Bright Start Education and Mentorship programme was founded in 2008 as a NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION and PUBLIC BENEFIT ORGANISATION,to address the tangible social injustices in Hout Bay. The Organisation primary objective is to effect CHANGE through EDUCATION AND MENTORSHIP.
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO?
There are two townships in Hout Bay that houses the working class of the area. Imizamo Yethu (Mandela Park), a diverse
community that has about 40 000 people whilst a further 14 000 reside
in the fishing community called Hangberg. South Africa’s oppressive past which excluded people of colour from equal opportunities, has therefore left Hout Bay’s poor stuck in a perpetual web of poverty- generational, complex and holistic. Despite two decades of democracy, social exclusion continues to divide Hout Bay’s rich
and poor significantly.
Even with the Western Cape’s education system being
classed as one of the best in the country, according to theWestern
Cape Youth Strategy (2012) our children face huge educational challenges. If only a third of the population over 20 has a
matric, 48% of learners entering the school system in grade 1 do not complete matric, and of those who do complete
matric just over a third get university entrance passes – our Education system is failing our children.
We therefore understand the Social Pathologies in Hout Bay -the high crime rate amongst teenagers, youth in gangs, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and Child Headed Households, low skilled adults and the high unemployment rate among both our youth and adults, being a symptom and offspring of the ongoing inferior education at our public schools and lack of equal educational opportunities.
.OUR SOLUTION: A Holistic Education and Mentorship Programme
Using Education to bridge the huge socio-economic gap between the rich and the poor by funding the education of previously disadvantaged learners. The Education and Mentorship Support Programme
is developed on a holistic model that focuses on (1) QUALITY EDUCATON with a strong focus on and support for Maths and Science (2) THE SOCIAL COHESION OF OUR
LEARNERS (3)THE PARENTAL SUPPORT AND THE
EMPOWERMENT OF OUR PARENTS.
HOW WE WILL BE RAISING FUNDS?
We are appealing to individuals, organizations, corporates, and philanthropists who are passionate about Social Justice and Poverty Alleviation and Eradication, to partner with us to achieve our goal in raising R240 000 for the scholarships of these learners. This includes school fees, extra tuition, after care and extra murals, stationery and books and psycho-social support.
