Together Changing Children’s Lives

The Amy Biehl Foundation is a non-profit organisation that offers programmes to develop and empower youth (5 - 18 years of age) living in the challenged and vulnerable communities within the Western Cape. The programmes place a focus on the creative side of the child’s brain, and supplement the shortcomings of the educational system in the townships of South Africa. There are huge inadequacies in the schools in which we work, creating a great need for our programmes.

Class of 2012 Learners exiting Grade 12 in 2012 have affectionately been called South Africa’s “born frees” since most were born in the year of the first free and democratic elections. Enrolled in Grade 1 in 2001, 7 years since democracy, they’ve experienced 12 years of schooling under the new curriculum. The number of fulltime candidates writing the NSC has increased from 496 090 in 2011 to 511 152 in 2012 – an increase of 15 062 candidates. The number of part-time candidates who wrote in 2012 is 81 552 compared to 80 116 in 2011 (an increase of 1 436). (Statement during the announcement of the 2012 National Senior Certificate Grade 12 Examination Results by Mrs Angie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education, SABC Auditorium: 02 January 2013)

 Reaching over 2000 youngsters every day, the programmes are having a very positive effect on the youth as well as the communities in which they live. We provide educational and cultural activities that offer students healthy alternatives to all the negative influences within their society, unlock their creative talent and create future emotionally well rounded individuals, leaders and entrepreneurs for South Africa.

A basic meal is provided daily for the children, and with the greening & environment programme, youngsters are actually given an opportunity to grow vegetables for their teachers, class mates and communities. Programmes include;

* After School Care * Music, Including Violin, Guitar, Recorder, Marimba, Choral Singing and Brass* * HIV / AIDS Peer Education * Greening and Environment   * Literacy * Creative Arts, Beading, * Drama & Dance - Kwaito, Modern, Traditional and Ballet * Sport including soccer, hockey, swimming, diving, cricket, netball * Computer Literacy*

We have moved to C6, Oude Molen Eco Village, Alexandra Road, Pinelands, 7405
