Youth Day on 16 June in South Africa commemorates the start of the Soweto riots of 1976, initially sparked by a government edict that all instruction in black schools would be held in Afrikaans. The iconic picture of Hector Pieterson, a black schoolchild shot by the police, brought home to many people within and outside South Africa the brutalities of the Apartheid regime.

The Hope Academy project will be celebrating Youth Day with a special event at the Dobsonville Hope Academy in Soweto. A coaching clinic and tournament will be held for school children from the surrounding area. Special guest coaches on the day will be Hope Academy patrons Matthew Booth and Ricardo Katza.

Also two special "virtual" events will happen on the same day... the launch of the Hope Academy logo and the launch of the Support a Child programme... your opportunity to invest in the life of a future African leader. Click here to find out more on this initiative...
