Adv Johan Kruger SC obtained the LL.B (cum laude) and LL.D degrees from Potchefstroom University, where he was also chairman of the SRC.
He spent most of his professional life at the Pretoria Bar. His areas of speciality include Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Environmental Law. He has held acting appointments to the Transvaal Bench of the High Court on numerous occasions.
During the period 1987 - 1994 he was Professor of Public Law at Potchefstroom University. During this time he twice spent research periods in Germany and at the European Human Rights Court.
He was involved in both the Constitutional-making process at Kempton Park and Cape Town. In the latter regard he was a member of the Panel of Seven Experts appointed in terms of the interim Constitution, to advise the Constitutional Assembly in the writing of the final Constitution.
During his years as Professor, he also served as Director of the Legal Aid Clinic and later on as Director of the Community Law Centre. As such, he initiated and administered the Street Law Programme, various human rights related programmes and the tutoring of paralegals. His community service furthermore includes the chairmanship of the National Human Rights Trust and of the North-West Education Foundation.
He is married to Hester and they have three grown-up children.
