Advocate Nichola de Havilland matriculated at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Pretoria and obtained her B.A. and LL.B degrees at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg where she was also Chairperson of the SRC. She completed her LL.M (with distinction) in Advanced Labour Law at the University of Cape Town.
She was admitted as an attorney in 1978 and practiced in trade mark law and company law for fifteen years. In addition, she has spent eight years in research, specifically at the Cape High Court and at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Socio-Legal Research. Her publications have appeared in, amongst others, the South African Journal on Human Rights and the South African Law Journal, and she has received a number of awards for research conducted. She was recently admitted as an advocate.
Nikki’s community involvement includes working as a volunteer teacher at Ikageng Literacy School from 1979 to 1986, acting as a consultant to the Black Sash Legal Advice Bureau between 1979 and 1996 and being an Executive Member of the Association of Cape School Governing Bodies from 1997 to 1999.
