Letter from the Director, 2008 Year report: “I understand now that Kuyasa is about people development” These were the words said by the present deputy Mayor of Stellenbosch at the Celebration day of Kuyasa in May this year. For me those words meant seeing the results of 7 years of work focused on holistic community development and reconciliation in a post apartheid era and in a community where mistrust, among other things, is rampant. This remark was significant because it came from a politician that was previously very sceptical about our organization. It is one thing to attempt community development, but it is another to be recognized by the people to be for the people. We at Kuyasa have worked hard to establish this trust and recognition, but also realize that it has to be earned every day. In December 2007, the lease for our present property was approved unanimously by our local governing body, the Municipality of Stellenbosch. This was largely due to the support of our Board and the pastors in the community. The pastors and their wives, who attended two camps this year, have shown a depth of growth and unity that has never been seen before. We have watched as many relationships between the pastors and their wives and between the pastors themselves, trained and untrained, have improved and healed. We know of no other community where nearly all the pastors come together for training, fellowship and fraternal planning. This has also been recognized by the Municipality who has met with them on several occasions in connection with municipal issues. This year like all previous years has been an uphill struggle to establish Christian faith and values in a community that is battling to survive amid crime, unemployment, all forms of abuse and lethargy. In spite of this we are seeing significant breakthroughs amongst the pastors, their wives, the youth and the children. At Kuyasa we are privileged to have good Christian mentors leading our youth and children’s groups. This is a key element for our success with our youth work and remains a priority. We are so delighted with the spiritual growth seen amongst our children and teenagers at our Bible Studies and yearly camps. They have also started a daily prayer meeting. The number of young people involved in our recreational and educational and Bible programs have grown by nearly 300% this year. We have been able to send over 130 children and teens to various camps and conferences this year which has given them a huge spiritual injection. With the decline in the world economy and the uncertainty of future funding, we have accomplished a lot in the past 12 months concerning the renovations of our new property. We have a new roof on our office building with a reinforced loft that has been turned into a Learning Center. We also have a new and larger kitchen with a cold room. The barn that houses the Construction School has also come very far with its renovations. We praise the Lord for His faithfulness and provision in this year. We are indebted to all our partners, donors, volunteers, friends and colleagues that have contributed to the success of this year Blessings & Grace in 2009, Jenny Carstens Director of Programs
