About Devra Davis
Dr Devra Davis, award-winning American scientist and writer of the book The Secret History of the War on Cancer has been instrumental in focusing public attention on health risks associated with cell phones. “Do you want to play Russian roulette with your brain? I don’t know that cell phones are dangerous. But I don’t know that they are safe”, she said in an interview. “We shouldn’t wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later, when it comes to our children. Children should use cell phones only for emergencies because their brains are still developing”.
About the book The Secret History of the War on Cancer
The War on Cancer set out to find, treat, and cure a disease. Left untouched were many of the things known to cause cancer, including tobacco, the workplace, radiation, or the global environment. Proof of how the world in which we live and work affects whether we get cancer was either overlooked or suppressed. This has been no accident. The War on Cancer was run by leaders of industries that made cancer-causing products, and sometimes also profited from drugs and technologies for finding and treating the disease. Filled with compelling personalities and never-before-revealed information, The Secret History of the War on Cancer shows how we began fighting the wrong war, with the wrong weapons, against the wrong enemies-a legacy that persists to this day. This is the gripping story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain. Copies of the book will be for sale at the event at R225-00 per book.
About the CANSA Science & Resource Centre
The Cancer Care and Information Centre opened its doors to the public on 31 August 1991 to cater for the needs of newly-diagnosed cancer patients and their families. As much as CANSA is deeply involved in patient care, CANSA is also involved in science – according to the CANSA mission where the focus is on research of early diagnosis, detection, prevention and care. The purpose of our research strategy is to extend our current leadership role within the cancer research environment, to ensure global recognition by providing evidence based support to CANSA’s health and advocacy programmes, hereby contributing towards the unique service proposition of CANSA, as well as the greater needs of the South African public.
