The Isiqalo Foundation

Cause Profile

The Isiqalo Foundation, a registered SA NPO, was established in 2010 by volunteers Tim Conibear, Thomas Ndabeni, Pamela Dlulane and Daniella Wagener. Isiqalo was set-up to support the development of sports and educational programmes in the Western Cape.

Isiqalo sees sport as an excellent tool to reach at-risk children and young adults in developing communities and seeks to develop community run and managed development programmes, rooted in Sport. Isiqalo aims to offer the appropriate management, governance, visibility and funding to allow programmes to develop from grassroot level to autonomous community owned social enterprises.

The first project launched by Isiqalo was the Playmaker programme, run by community members in Masiphumelele, which uses soccer to educate youth about lifeskills, Gender and Violence. The programme continues to operate and is run by Thomas and Phila, employing 8 community coaches.

In 2011 Tim Conibear completed research on the Waves for Change programme, an HIV and leadership training programme rooted in surfing. Waves for Change was launched by Isiqalo in 2011 and today employs 12 coaches under the direction of Tim Conibear and managers Apish Tshetsha and Aphelile Makeleni who run Waves for Change centres at Monwabisi beach and Muizenberg beach.

As of 2012, Isiqalo is governed by a board of 7 independent trustees who operate on a voluntary basis.
