In South Africa, where an estimated 3 million adults are illiterate and another 8 million are functionally illiterate, the importance of increasing access to good education and stimulating a love of books and learning cannot be overestimated. “South Africa needs educated, skilled and literate citizens to help it grow and thrive. Without access to decent schools , dedicated teachers, books and other resources, children face an uphill battle to educate themselves and improve their circumstances.” (Source: SASIX)
If we don’t act, yet another generation of children remains firmly disadvantaged, just like their parents before them and the vision of a new, integrated and equal South Africa slips further into the future.
The aim of the Bright Start Education Support Programme is to bridge the achievement divide one child at a time, to contribute to the transformation of our society.
