GADRA Commercial Centre

The GADRA Commercial Centre provides a full-time 1-year course for 24 students focusing on computer skills, office procedures, English, Bookkeeping and Accounting. For admission to the Centre, students need a National Senior Certificate and must pass an English Entrance Exam. There is keen demand and many prospective students are turned away. The majority of students are women.

Where and When?

The Centre operates from a fully equipped classroom in the ‘Old Gaol’ building, Somerset Street, Grahamstown map. Classes are held each weekday morning during the Eastern Cape school terms.

Aim

To enable qualifying students to obtain the prestigious City and Guild’s qualifications which significantly enhance their employment prospects. Students also learn the disciplines of punctuality, consistent attendance and the ability to focus on specific tasks and complete them efficiently, all vital skills for success in the job market.

Results

Over the past three years (2009-2011), 239 City and Guild's subject certificates have been awarded to students of the GADRA Commercial Centre.

Employment Prospects

The Centre is the first port of call for Grahamstown companies wishing to hire administrative assistants. Generally up to two-thirds of students find employment in the first six months after graduating. In recent years employers have included Standard Bank, ABSA Bank, Rhodes University, local attorneys and retailers such as Clicks and Pick ’n Pay.
