The ACT Rhino Fund's goal is to raise R10million for urgently needed rhino anti-poaching priorities in South Africa that are implemented by legitimate conservation groups that support large groups of threatened rhinos.

More than 1,700 rhino have been killed by poachers in South Africa between 2008 and 2012 and there are alarming signs that 2013 will be the worst year on record, with a projection of over 800 rhinos likely to die at the hands of globally-controlled criminal poaching syndicates, many of whom have links to international terrorist groups.  The threats to brave South African rangers and anti-poaching units grows daily: they need support - now.

In 2012, 400+ South Africans jumped from 10,000ft in ACT's Skydive for Rhinos campaign and generated R3,4million in donations.  An additional R3million was pledged by companies, trusts, foundations and international donors for innovative anti-poaching projects (to be received during 2013).  Added to the inaugural (2011) Skydive for Rhinos campaign that raised R500,000, this brings the total raised by the ACT Rhino Fund for South Africa's threatened rhinos to nearly R7million.

This year, the ACT Rhino Fund aims to raise a further R3million to reach the R10million goal:  please help us by becoming an Activist for the ACT Rhino Fund.  You are assured that your efforts will be supporting genuine efforts throughout South Africa.

100% of funds raised will go to four major anti-poaching activities that urgently need support:

1. Resources for game reserves & anti-poaching units (APU):  from basic APU team equipment that helps their work in remote areas of the South African bushveld (eg: patrol equipment), to hi-tech resources such as thermal imaging units; emergency funding for game reserves' informant networks and other emergencies;
2. Aerial surveillance:  extending the reach of the very successful Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing (est.in 2012) from 10 to 24 game reserves in northern KwaZulu that hosts one of the largest rhino populations in South Africa, and supporting other provinces with large numbers of rhino to implement their own aerial surveillance programmes;
3. Specialist Skills and Support: advanced, tactical training for rangers and APU teams, support for intelligence operations and assisting investigations to ensure convictions of rhino poachers
4. Community interventions:  building supportive relationships between game reserves and poor communities, educating children and community groups on the impact rhino poaching is having on South Africa and why it must be stopped.

Funds will be distributed nationally, with key priority regions being  KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo,North West and the Eastern Cape.

A partnership approach: 

The ACT Rhino Fund works in partnership with other key conservation groups to ensure that funds only go to recognized, legitimate anti-poaching needs that are implemented by conservation experts and anti-poaching specialists.  Partnerships include Project Rhino KZN, StopRhinoPoaching.com, Sabi-Sands Wildtuin and the Private Rhino Owners Association - amongst others.  It is only by working together that South Africa can hope to overcome rhino poaching and funds raised by the ACT Rhino Fund go to joint initiatives that benefit large rhino populations.
