Kids of Kurland

Cause Profile

Kids of Kurland is an organization started with the goal: To focus on human resources on behalf of the parents, community and school governing body”

Kurland village is rural township in the stunning Crags (20 km from Plettenberg Bay) area over looked by Peak Formosa and is on the edge of the Tsitsikamma  Nature Reserve in South Africa. Due to the location of the village, there is a high incidence of unemployment, therefore leading to problems with alcoholism, HIV and domestic violence. However together we CAN change in the future, it does not always have to be this way and it starts with the education of the children.

"Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world." ~ Nelson Mandela

Since 2001 The Kids of Kurland project has helped with raising funds for the Crags Primary school and have over the years employed up to 20 teachers, including special needs teachers and social workers/life skills facilitators.

Life skills education presented to date have included topics such as empowerment, functional behavior, capacity building and coping skills. Programs introduced include child safety, resources for life, pride project, outdoor life skills and AIDS education. Through the AIDS education being instituted, the concept of children educating their parents on the issues is being introduced through joint home work books.

The results on overall input have been monitored and there has been great progress and a marked difference in atmosphere made with the children, staff and parents in social as well as educational issues that were affecting the community. Even though there has been great achievements made more is necessary for this project to continue. As this is a charitable organization it relies on donations and as the cost of living has increased over the last few years so has the expense.  All fundraising is done on a voluntary basis and balance sheets are available on request.
